Definition of Special Needs for IdahoSTARS (adapted from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) 12/16/09

Every child comes to child care with all types of special needs. For IdahoSTARS purposes, “special needs” is defined as a disability or special health care need that requires extra support in order for the child to be included and successful in a child care setting. This may include any chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional condition requiring ongoing treatment or services that are not typically required by the general population of children documented by an I.E.P., I.F.S.P., or a letter from the attending doctor or health professional.

Special needs may include: (A. Cohen, 2007)

Asthma Mobility issues
Chronic ear infections Diabetes
Cerebral Palsy Significant vision or hearing loss
Congenital Scoliosis Communication issues
Down syndrome Special health care needs
Severe Eczema Mental health needs
Epilepsy Social/emotional disabilities
Significant  food, environmental, insect allergies Challenging behaviors related to serious emotional disturbances
Developmental disabilities Learning disabilities
 
Early Childhood Education or related degree i.e. Elementary Education
