The following is a
sample letter to get you started, to make it as easy as possible for
you to respond. It contains key elements for supporting
this legislation. The real key is with you personalizing the
letter, making it your own rather than just filling in a form
letter. It will take you about 10 to 15 minutes to send a letter
to your Representative and to your Senator. It's up to you!

Dear Representative ______________ or Senator ______________ ,
I am a constituent in your district. I am writing this letter in
support of passage of (insert number and title of bill) currently awaiting committee
hearing before the (House or Senate) Health and Welfare committee. I believe that
children in child care regardless of whether they are in a commercial
or a home setting must be safe. (House or Senate) Bill #____ will require that
all settings in which child care services are provided for compensation
for (insert correct number or your description) or more unrelated children, except for relative and occasional
care, must have:
- Staff and volunteers working unsupervised with the children must pass
a criminal
history
background check.
- Staff and unsupervised volunteers must be
certified in First Aid and CPR
- Areas used for child care must pass both a health
and a fire inspection.
These changes can be funded by a minimal increase in inspection fees to
the child care industry. The current fee schedule is almost
twenty years old and does not reflect the actual cost of inspections.
It is estimated that this will result in approximately $8.00 per month
in additional cost to the provider. I support this legislation because
it increases the health and safety of children in child care settings
not only in my community but statewide with minimal fiscal impact on
the child care industry and the agencies that oversee the licensing
system.
